The Ocean View School District has a rich and interesting history as one of the oldest school districts in Orange County.
It is always important to understand our past to best inform us about how to approach our future.
In the words of Henry Ford, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

The Ocean View School District was formed in 1874 when the area was sparsely populated and each of today’s school sites was vegetable fields. The first school met in a building on Garfield Avenue. As noted on the District committee page, OVSD has four Core Values:
- Equity and Excellence
- Collaboration
- Integrity
- Innovation
In the context of the Facilities Master Plan process, these Core Values can be interpeted as follows:
- Equity and Excellence
- Items that affect the Health, Safety and Equity of the school’s students.
- Collaboration
- Items that affect the function of the school’s teaching environments, including administration spaces, gathering spaces, and instructional spaces.
- Integrity
- Items that affect the physical integrity of the school through maintenance or preservation (except building modernizations that affect collaboration as noted above).
- Innovation
- Items that include forward-thinking environments that are not currently part of the District, technology, furniture and equipment, outdoor learning environments, specialized instructional areas, and all things related to sustainability.
